I love taking bridals...mostly because I love knowing secrets. :) So, here's a secret I've known since August...Brittany is a beautiful bride!! (Not surprising at all, right?!) Check out the back of her dress. Stunning!

Follow up to the challenge
So, on Friday I wrote a challenge to anyone who might read it--to write a quick email to a former teacher or professor, thanking them for exactly what they've done for you. I did it, and boy, did the two I had to thank prove their greatness to me!! It's been a mere weekend, and I've already heard back from both gentlemen. Dr. Gaffin, who had me in a 450-500 person class, even said he remembered me!! Haha...not sure if I really believe that...but I'm not sure he's the type to lie, either...so I feel pretty good this morning!
Cheers, and happy Monday!

Friday CHALLENGE!
Instead of complaining about everything that's wrong with the world (including the Ranger's loss last night!), let's do something to improve someone's day.
Challenge: email a former teacher or professor (who you liked!) and tell them exactly why you still remember them.
I emailed Dr. Gaffin and Dr. Purinton from OU. That's Dr. Gaffin below, courtesy of www.ou.edu !!
Dr. Gaffin is an AMAZING teacher. Go to OU just to take intro-level science courses from him. Seriously. I was in a class that had about 1000 students in it--two sections of about 500--and by the end of the semester, he knew me by name--and not because I was obnoxious (I don't think :). He was dynamic, energetic, and worked harder to make sure the class was learning than 90% of the students. I am the worst at sciences. Hard, soft, whatever, it's not my thing. Ask my former teachers. It was really hard for me. But because of the way Dr. Gaffin formatted his lectures, assignments, and tests, I was able to take baby steps (hugely important in teaching/learning!), I was rewarded for taking those baby steps, and I was able to LEARN, and truly understand, the basics in Intro to Zoology. Amazing. (Shoutouts to my HISD science teachers as well! Never had a bad one. They worked hard to mold my brain, and I greatly appreciate all of them!)
I also wrote to Dr. Purinton, my Intro to Ethics prof from OU. That was a HARD class. I remember the final--it had a multiple choice section and three essays. One of the essays was entitled, "My Ethical Theory." Talk about a butt-kicker. Here's what I wrote to Dr. P:
Dr. P.--
As a former student, I just wanted to drop you a quick note.
I took your Intro to Ethics class in the fall of 2005 as a brand-new freshman. I still have my binder full of notes, quizes, and tests from your class, and have been looking through it for the past few minutes. On a side note, I think I hit the climax of my intelligence in your class. :) Your class was one of the hardest I took in college, and I'm completely positive I never worked harder for another class. You were very challenging, but I loved your style, and I appreciated your desire for me to truly learn to think more logically and with better reason.
I'm a high school English/Language Arts teacher now, and I wanted to let you know that I am starting to learn to appreciate the really great teachers I've had in my life. I'm learning that the ones who view teaching as a lifestyle, and are willing to give up their own personal time--ie, reading practice exam essays in the dark of night and sending back helpful commentary via email--are the ones I have appreciated the most, yet the ones I am like the least. I think of you, along with a few others--Dr. Gaffin, for instance--when I give myself a peptalk to increase my level of commitment to my students.
Thank you for challenging me to learn as a 18 year old, and challenging me to be a better teacher as a 25 year old. I hope life is treating you well.
Warm regards,
Rebecca (Lowder) Egger
So, do it! It took me more time to write this blog post than to pick which of my amazing teachers/professors I wanted to write to today, track down the email addresses for each of those guys, and write to both of them. No excuses. Go go go now.

Our family is growing!!!
...rather, it's already grown!!
We got a sweet new puppy on Monday night. What did you think I meant by a growing family?! ;)
Little sweet pea's name is Nellie, and she's pretty darn cute!! 11 week old border collie-golden retriever mix.
She had ring worms--pretty bad--on her face, and though they're gone, they definitely left a scar! Poor baby. We're pretty sure we can get rid of that mean ol' scar though. Let me know if you have any suggestions!!
The other side of her face is just fine!! Great little profile.
Her big ol' belly helps her balance upside down :)
Good news: big brother Nolan loves little Nellie! He was cautious at first, but he's pretty excited to have a buddy now! They love to play.
Welcome to the family, Miss Nellie!

Judson is ONE year old!
Out of Jeff's 10 co-coaches, FOUR of them had babies last year. Well, their wives did. You know what I mean.
Anyhow, this is sweeeet Judson, one of the precious four born last year. I am so glad his momma invited me over to get a few photos in honor of his first birthday. I tell you what, I've never seen a kiddo with so many silly facial expressions! I was cracking up editing these. :) This is just the tip of the ice burg!!
What a cutie!!!

Christmas Gifts
Okay, I know it's still October--and mid-October at that--but I am a bargain hunter and I love giving gifts, so it's TIME to start thinking about these sorts of things!!
I wanted to throw a little thought out there to the blog-world. There's a little graphic floating around facebook that says something to the effect of, "Want to occupy Wall Street? Do your holiday shopping at a small independent merchant." Now, I am not going to pretend to understand what is going on in local or national politics, with white-collared folks or sign-holding folks, but I can tell you that I definitely understand and support a certain side of that graphic!!
Please do buy from small independent merchants. Speaking as someone whose college career was supported by the income from a small business, as well as being a small business owner myself, I can testify that this kind of thing is risky and rewarding, but we don't put ourselves out there unless we believe in our products. Our country has several dominating retailers who do a great job of producing mass quantity at a scanty price--and I shop at those places too--but I think we should all make an effort to shift our shopping more towards quality merchants who truly need our support.
This isn't just throwing money towards goofy, inartistic individuals, either--there are some beautiful products out there just waiting to introduce themselves to you.
Needs ideas? YOU GOT IT. :)
Etsy is one of my favorite sites. Favorite vendors? Among them... Petunkalunka, HOUSEofLOVELY, and Annie's Block Corner. Okay, Annie's isn't an etsy page, but her stuff is still so adorable!!
What else do I love? PrettyTape and Fabuluster for sure.
How about food? I know of some great tamales!! This is probably what my grandmother wants...
Sassy hats? Oh I've got that for you too.
Wait, wait--we've forgotten about a GREAT option! Music!! Here are some of my favorites: BarronCP, Ryan and Ryan, Lainey Wright, the bands supported by The Pandarosa, and Typewriter Poet. Contact any of them, and give the gift of music!
Other ideas: appointments with a beauty consultant (I'm going to be highlighting one very soon! Stay tuned!) for a young teen girl learning the "ropes" of makeup and hairstyle. World Vision's gift catalog. Amazing. Membership at a local gym, like Get Fit Gunter or Texoma Fit. Or, instead of getting your friends and family gift cards to nation-wide restaurants, get a gift certificate to a local one!
Of course, I love Thread Houston. Most beautiful baby clothes, maternity clothes, baby toys, etc. that I've ever seen!
Don't forget to think about the wonderfully talented people in your life who offer great skills and services. We had someone come clean the house for Mother's Day once--might have been the best gift we've ever given. :) We had Dad's truck detailed this summer--total hit.
My fav? Oh, that's BE Photography for sure. :) That's right! I offer gorgeous prints at really affordable prices. Have we already taken photos this year? Would you like to give your parents or loved ones a beautiful framed print or mounted canvas? Just email me!! Haven't taken pictures yet, but want to? We're losing daylight! Literally! Have you looked outside recently? Email me pronto!!
Start your Christmas "shopping" a little early by looking around the internet, thinking about what gifts and talents your friends and family have, and make a difference in the way you shop! I'm going to try this tactic with the rest of my holiday shopping, and I'm pretty excited about it.
Whew. That was a lot of words. Here's a handsome little devil to balance it all out. Cheers!!
